At the Africa Advocacy Foundation (AAF), our principles define our identity and shape our approach. They guide every partnership, programme, and decision we make. Whether we are supporting survivors, strengthening safeguarding measures, empowering youth, or collaborating with communities across the UK and East Africa, these core values remain central to everything we do.
Human Rights
Human rights are the absolute foundation of our work. We believe that everyone deserves to live free from violence, discrimination, exploitation, and fear—regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, disability, migration status, or social background.

Our programmes equip individuals to understand and exercise their rights, while also supporting institutions to actively uphold them. We advocate for women and girls affected by violence, champion children’s rights, support migrant and refugee access to essential services, and partner with public bodies to ensure strict accountability. Lasting change only happens when people are empowered to access support, participate in decisions, and influence the very systems that affect their lives.
Safeguarding
Keeping people safe is not just a policy or a compliance requirement for us; it is a fundamental responsibility embedded in all our operations. We are deeply committed to creating environments where children and adults at risk are fully protected from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and harm.
This expertise extends far beyond our own organisation. We actively work with schools, community and faith groups, sports bodies, and public institutions to improve safeguarding practices and build safer environments. By helping organisations develop robust policies and training professionals to recognise risks, we reinforce the reality that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
Equality
Strong, resilient communities are built on equality, inclusion, and opportunity. Many of the people we support face intersecting disadvantages, including poverty, gender inequality, racism, displacement, and social exclusion. Our goal is to dismantle these barriers and promote true equal opportunity.

From preventing violence against women and girls to promoting inclusive education and economic participation, we ensure that marginalised communities have equitable access to services. We recognise that achieving real equality means actively addressing the barriers to equal outcomes, rather than simply treating everyone the same.
Participation
Communities are the leaders of change, not passive beneficiaries. We believe that people understand their own challenges better than anyone else. That is why we involve children, young people, women, and survivors in identifying priorities, designing programmes, and evaluating outcomes.

Through youth-led initiatives, survivor-informed services, and community consultations, lived experience shapes our work at every single stage. This participatory approach builds trust, strengthens accountability, and guarantees that our solutions are relevant and sustainable.
Partnership
Meaningful, large-scale change cannot be achieved in isolation. For nearly three decades, we have collaborated with governments, civil society, schools, health services, businesses, and international partners to tackle complex social issues.
